Proclaim is a male vocal group dedicated to Gospel music. There is an obvious bent towards the quartet singing tradition, as can be heard on this self-titled album. Beyond that, listening to Proclaim is an experience that knows no stereotypes, serving no particular style club, or race; You cannot miss the vocal harmony.
On the 3rd of May 1997, 4 vocalists and 1 keyboard player met in Johannesburg, for the first session of what would later become Proclaim. The song mix defined itself then, some acapella and then some vocal and instrument songs. From the early days, the group made sure to collect well-crafted vocal arrangements of Gospel songs from all over the world as well as arrange its own.
This collection then, the first published recording since the beginning, represents the music of Proclaim essentially. It is a beautifully blended fusion of music artistry and Gospel ministry, showcasing the smooth vocal hamonies of Proclaim on a rainbow of Gospel classics, hymns, Spirituals, a bit of southern Gospel and modern original compositions from group members. You can expect real vocal performance from this one.
This album comes as a breath of fresh air, especially in the South African Gospel scene, where vocal quartet harmonies were last heard in the 70's and 80's from the King's Messengers Quartet. The group credits the Breath of Life Quartet from the 70's and acapella group Take6 as some of their major influences.
