The Buckfever Underground - Saves Album Cover

The Buckfever Underground began in 1997 as little more than an in-joke/social experiment by Toast Coetzer (English and Afrikaans spoken word vocals) and Gilad Hockman (random acoustic guitar). Performing an odd mix of spoken word, stream of consciousness vocals over random acoustic guiter the pair gained a small following in the university town of Grahamstown were they were noted as much for their poster campaigns as for their music. The following year the duo entered and won the alternative section of the national Vuurdoop songwriting competition. The prize for the competition was a free recording and release under JNS Records which resulted in the their debut EP, Jou Medemens Is Dood. ‘Medemens’ received either very good (“Fucking great” – SL Magazine) or very bad reviews (“Pretentious as hell” – The Mail and Guardian). Either way, with track like ‘Die Volk Is In Die Kak’ and ‘The Highveld Is A Shit Place To Be In Winter’ the EP and the band slowly began to find it’s audience and the beginnings of a cult following.

In 2001, the group moved it’s head-quarters to Cape Town where it’s line-up was reshuffled to include Jon Savage on Piano/Keyboards (Savage had also provided some drums on Jou Medemens Is Dood) and Stephen Timm on drums. For the next two years The Buckfever Underground established itself on the Cape Town live circuit as the groups’ sound and style settled into a new mode. In 2003, The bands second EP, TAFL – Teaching Afrikaans As A Foreign Language was released to critical acclaim. ('extraordinary frontman-vocalist Toast Coetzer' - The Star, 'a stream-of-consciousness glimpse into being young in South Africa' - The Mail And Guardian, 'Shamefully, I must admit that I have never seen them live, but after hearing this I feel ready to aim a low kick at my own person for that' - Cape Argus, 'I can't get enough' - Shape Magazine)

In 2005, the band again reshuffled to allow Jon Savage to focus on his own band, Cassette. Although Savage has not left the band, his regular absence required the addition of a new member. This place was taken up by experimental guitarist Righard Kapp who had already release two solo albums of his own. That same year, the 5 piece began work on their first full album which would eventually be entitled ‘Saves’.

The Buckfever Underground also have two unofficial releases: Survival Is Personal (1999 - a collection of demo’s and experiments) and the live album Trying To Do Something About This Goddamn Terrible Bleak Winter(2005).

    Album Information:
'Saves' was recorded in June 2005 and while post production was officially completed in October that year, life got in the way and the album was only ready for release in August 2007. As The Buckfever Undergrounds first full album and third official release, 'Saves' is another clear step in the group's development. Featuring 11 tracks, Toast Coetzers lyrics are as incisive and observant as ever while the bands’ finds it’s sound drawing from it’s richest landscape.
