“They carry news that must get through,
To build a dream for me and you
They choose the path where no-one goes.
They hold no quarter. They ask no quarter” - Led Zeppelin
In true rock and roll spirit No Quarter will feed your soul with sometimes straight forward, sometimes complex, dark and emotionally loaded lyrics and guitar riffs.
No Quarter is the name of Johnathan Martin’s new rock band. Johnathan is by no means a stranger to the SA music industry and has been a guitarist and vocalist for Piet Botha’s legendary rock band Jack Hammer for more than a decade now. The other member of No Quarter who is no stranger either, Tertius du Plessis, has been Jack Hammer’s bassist for many years.
The other members of the new band are Leslie Stuart on drums and vocals, Aidan Martin on guitar and Jay Bolton contributed additional vocals on the album.
The debut album In My Blood has seven original tracks on and three cover versions of Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Nick Drake respectively.
The original songs are mostly old school hard rock except for the beautiful acoustic track “Everything and Nothing”. “Scars on my guitar” is a song with a haunting vibe and words that remain long after the music has stopped playing.
What the title track “In My Blood” is about is be best described by Johnathan himself “The song is for everyone who has a dream or an idea and the message is to keep believing in that dream and to hold on to it tightly. It doesn’t matter what anyone says to you. You cannot deny who it is that you are, you need to believe in yourself. It’s in your blood”.
No Quarter’s influences are clearly Led Zeppelin, Guns ‘n Roses, Miles Davis, Pearl Jam etc BUT make no mistake, they are unique as well and ask...no quarter...from anybody.
In between the darkness there are positive messages of hope on the album, once again so typical of true rock.
Feed your soul. Rock and Roll will never die.
