Sweet Voodoo is the Southern Gypsey Queen's second album. The album was
released by Wolmer Records and is distributed throughout South Africa
by Bowline.
Sweet Voodoo is a straight-forward, working class, rock 'n roll album with
deep roots in the blues. Souls of Africa, the first single on the album, was
chosen as samusic.co.za's theme song for 2005 and was inspired by great
South Africans like Nelson Mandela, Steve Biko and Beyers Naude. Other
singles on the album include Song For The Captain, a tribute to Michael
Wiggill, a friend who died tragically, and Rock 'n Roll Soldier, which was
written about Jack Hammer, the legendary South African rock band. The album
was produced by Lanie Van der Walt, who played a pivotal role in the
direction of the album.
Southern Gypsey Queen played at the Manchester Blues Festival in England in
2005 and proudly represented South Africa in this endeavor.
With a strong backing by top South African musicians like Piet Botha and
Karen Zoid, the album stands a really good chance to do well.
Southern Gypsey Queen is: Gareth Wilson (guitar and vocals), Tammy Wilson
(Bass and vocals), Paul Wilson (drums and vocals), Thys Smit (guitar).
Other musicians featured on the album were Piet Botha (piano and organ) and
extra vocals by Andrew Massey, Monde Msuphwana, Gugu Cebekhulu and Rose
Mbubli.
Long live Rock 'n Roll!
