Amanda Strydom is one of South Africa's most celebrated artists. She received her B.A.Drama degree from the University of Pretoria in 1979 and was honoured by the university with the Laureatus/Laureata Award for exceptional achievement in 2003.
An acclaimed actress, Strydom also writes musical theatre and lyrics. Her book, 'Kaalvoet', featuring her lyrics, was published in 2004 by Genugtig Publishers. She cannot read or write music and has no formal training in singing. She composes her lyrics with esteemed musical directors Janine Neethling, Peter McLea and Didi Kriel, the singer-songwriter Lize Beekman, guitarist Juan Oosthuizen, bassist Greame Currie and drummer Vinnie Henrico.
Strydom caused an outrage when she wrote and performed a song about the cruelty of the passlaws in 1986 and gave the Black Power salute – since then, she has often been called 'Amandla' Strydom in the press.
Strydom has recorded 11 albums to date, won four Geraas Awards, one SAMA, the VONK award and the Kanna Award for Best Female artist. Her one woman musical plays and acting have earned her nine awards – ranging from the FNB Vita to the Star Tonight Award for best English actress in a TV series.
Strydom sings in Afrikaans, English, Zulu, French, Spanish and Dutch.
