Information:
Floukop is the debut album of Die Menere, a side project of Paul Riekert (the brain of 'industrial' outfit Battery9) and André Janse Van Rensburg (the former Battery9, Ohm and Supernature guitarist.) Known best for making noisy and hectic music, making this album was a refreshing change for both of them.
This is a very quiet album. As the cover suggests, it is set in a vast empty space with just a few audio elements added. Floukop takes as a starting point the sound of old-school Afrikaans music and adds a ghostly Country–twang to it. The result is a dark, twisted take on folk music, balanced with downright odd and humourous moments.
Press Reviews:
'A highlight of 2005, a lovely find. Die Menere are in a class of their own.' (Pieter Redelinghuys, Insig Magazine, Sept 2005)
'Floukop, an album of spooky folk and alt.country music that calls to mind the work of Bonnie Prince Billy, Sun Kil Moon and even Johnny Cash, yet with a distinctive South African feel... - Riekert is one of South Africa's music greats and Floukop is right up there with his best work.' – (Craig Canavan, jhblive.com, Oct 2005)
