The long awaited debut album of Afrikaans electro rock pioneers Thys Nywerheid has finally arrived. Aptly titled “Husse met lang messe”, Dawid Kahts (guitars, vocals and production) and Jamie Sharpe (turntables) break all the rules that define contemporary popular music.

From the dark Kwaito rock opening number “Tsotsi” to the tongue in the cheek “Bokkie Sokkie Skoppelmaai”, the listener is taken through a musical house of mirrors where humour and political satire abounds.

With an omnipresent funk presence, the zeitgeist of modern South Africa is perfectly reflected. A definite highlight of the album is a cover of the seminal Bernoldus Niemand song, “Snorcity”. With a musical backdrop that provokes the lounge at the restaurant at the end of the Universe, the band seeks to bring the genius of the late James Phillips to a new generation.

Think Fatboyslim meets Oom Paul Kruger and Frank Zappa for a skateboarding session on the moon and you will still not be nowhere near what this album sounds like.
