Foto na Dans is currently emerging as one of the most progressive rock bands on the SA Music scene. Their new 8 track album “Pantomime op
Herwinbare Klanke” follows on the success of their SAMA nominated album
INTERVENSIE. Expect progressive exploratory sounds in continuance of their move away from main stream paradigms.
With “Pantomime op Herwinbare Klanke” Foto na Dans takes a quantum leap forward in terms of the growth of their Progressive Rock Sound. The new songs are evident of their ability to create music that challenges their own musical abilities.
With its huge, layered and progressive sound, this album is going to require quite a few listens before the proverbial penny drops. The music does not heed to any commercial formulas and includes an overture and tracks that are mostly longer or shorter than a standard radio-single. One can’t help thinking that this would have been the kind of music that a Gustav Mahler or a Wagner would have composed if they had access to rock guitars and computers. More modern day influences include “Muse” and “Radiohead.”
Although there are only 8 tracks on the album, it contains much more musical information than one would find on most full length CD's.
The title “Pantomime op Herwinbare Klanke”, ironically heralds the end of a 3 month silence during which Le Roi (lead singer) could not perform due to damage to his vocal chords. He has more than recovered and his newly acquired vocal abilities have given a new direction to the band's music.
The album offers the discovery of various highlights the more you listen to it. If one has to select a representative theme it would be the track “Dowwe blou Beleid.” (more specifically the climax that builds up approx 4 minutes into the song.)
Commentary from Foto na Dans: “Nobody actually creates revolutionary music nowadays. It is usually always a composition of sounds that have been heard before. The public relates to these familiar sounds because it is less of a challenge to listen to. From there the title of our album. Translated into English “Pantomime on recaptured sounds.”
