Mark Schellhas started writing music from an early age, when he learnt his first instrument,
which was the piano.
When Mark started High School, 13, he voluntarily joined a community radio station in
Muizenburg. He worked as a volunteer for four years, acquiring skills as a sound engineer
(studio, recording and outdoor broadcasting) and eventually presenting and producing.
Mark left the radio world when he started writing his school‐leaving exams in 2001, and at
that stage he presented, produced and engineered is own radio show.
After high school, Mark spent two years in Europe where performed in various countries.
When Mark Schellhas returned to South Africa in 2003, he formed his own band, called
“Verismo” (after the classical/opera period in history – late 1800’s). Verismo gigged around
rigorously for four years, playing alongside nationally acclaimed artists at major festivals and
clubs around South Africa. Verismo recorded two EPs and their songs got a fair amount of
campus radio play with two singles reaching number 1 on the SA MP3 charts (www.24.com).
Mark Schellhas also wrote the soundtrack to the Billabong Pro surf competition on cable TV,
and his music was included on a compilation CD by SL Magazine, a nationally distributed
student magazine in South Africa.
In 2007 Verismo disbanded and Mark Schellhas started production on his solo music whilst
performing his solo acoustic set around Cape Town and later digitally released an EP,
“Digital Delites” on his own publishing label.
Mark has just released his EP “Here I Go Again”. The release will be followed by an extensive
CD tour both locally and internationally towards the end of 2008.
Mark was born in Johannesburg, and now lives in Cape Town, South Africa, where he writes
and performs his music.
