Neo Muyanga was born in Soweto, into a family of eminent composers and the originators of the Mozambican mbila - the forebearer of instruments like the marimba and the xylophone.
Neo studied the Italian madrigal tradition with choral maestro, piero poclen, at the United World College in Trieste, Italy
After completing his diploma, Neo joined Footprints Theatre Company in Nottingham, England, creating soundtracks to accompany the troupe's plays on tour around the United Kingdom, while also continuing his studies in sound engineering.
In 1996 , Neo co-founded the acoustic duo, Blk Sonshine , which toured extensively throughout South Africa and Swaziland, and later the United States and Europe.
Neo has to date composed music for choral ensemble, contemporary dance, theatre and cinema.
He continues to tour parts of the world performing on vocals, guitar, piano and mesinko (a traditional Ethiopian instrument).
The Listening Room (Mudra no. 28) was recorded at Flowerpot Studios and Neo's home studio in Cape Town during the year 2000.
This is an album of extremes; of differences approaching one another via the common thread of 'dreaming freedom'.
This record showcases Neo Muyanga's affinity for a wide-range of music and sound.
Neo played most of the instruments live, often multi-tracking and splicing himself into a sudden ensemble. Enjoy!
