Simply Dead is Toast Coetzer, Jane Breetzke and Jon Savage. What is Simply Dead? It’s a band that writes funny songs about death, motorbikes, desert bakers, the Wimpy, Will Self and Avroy Shlain reps.
Simply Dead formed in Cape Town during the winter of 2011 – Emoticon Breakdown is their debut album and was released on 29 November 2011.
Jon, Jane and Toast have known each other since university and have collaborated on many musical projects. Toast was Jon’s roadie back in the late 90s while on a coastal tour. And Jon is also part of Toast’s other band, The Buckfever Underground. Jane and Jon are also part of Cassette, and they’re also Hummingwolf, and half a dozen other projects.
In Simply Dead Toast takes over lead vocals, with Jane close on his heels. Jon’s in the vocals too, but somewhere in the back. They sing in English and Afrikaans and sometimes both languages in the same song. You want a bit of heartbreak? It’s here. How about a devil-at-the-crossroads song in the spirit of Valiant Swart? Or the Beastie Boys had their ghetto been the Knersvlakte?
All present and correct.
