Pieter Smit and Ben van Zyl, two young musicians from Pretoria, combine their talents on this impressive English and Afrikaans album.
Marcato - a musical term and Italian word which means “emphasis on notes” describe their music as “acoustic folk”.
“ We sing a little bit about love and more about life,” explains Ben. “And then of course about the roads you walk, dreams, different scenario’s and cowboys.”
Ben and Pieter co-wrote the songs and seasoned artist Wouter van de Venter cooperated with the composition of a few songs.
Pieter and Ben met when they studied sound engineering in Pretoria. They played three years ago in the band, Evelyn, which consisted of five members. After the band split up two years ago, Ben and Pieter decided to start a duo, Marcato, and they have been playing for a year and a half.
Wouter was impressed when he heard Marcato for the first time at a music festival at Hartebeespoortdam and decided to take them under his wing.
Since then Marcato made appearances at Aardklop arts festival in Potchefstroom and at various venues in Pretoria, which include Firkin, O’Hagans, Celtis Ridge and Café Barcelona.
“There is definitely a new interest in folk music. People approach us after our shows to tell us how much they enjoyed listening to real music again,” says Pieter.
Both singers are talented guitar players and Ben also plays the harmonica.
Pieter’s biggest music influences include Foo Fighters, Queen, Bob Dylan, Bon Iver and Ray Lomantagne.
Ben also likes the music of Bob Dylan, Queen, Ray Lamontagne and Coldplay. He also admires the talent of Chris Chameleon.
Both musicians are very excited about our local talent and also mentions the music of Christof Kotze, Vana and the O So Serious Folk Collective, the Tuin Dwergies and F*k*f Polisiekar.
Marcato - When His Whistle Blows boasts 13 original acoustic folk ballads which will appeal to a very broad audience.
David Klassen (percussion) also contributed on the album and Wouter was the music director.
