Somerfaan’s brand new album ‘Laaste Somer‘, does not only contain everything you’ve come to
expect from the maverick electronic producer, but much more. It still bears his signature sound;
a mix of edgy programmed beats from found sounds and weird samples, big electronic bass riffs,
dubby atmospherics and melodic synthesizer lines. On ‘Laaste Somer’ though, he has broadened his
musical palette considerably with contributions on guitar by Arnaud van Vliet and Anton L’amour,
guest vocalists Cito, Arno Carstens, Jane Rademeyer, Chris Papenfus, and his trusted old rap buddy,
Huyser Burger. He upgraded his studio and acquired a Roland JP8080 synthesizer (which features
very prominently on the album) to produce his best sounding album to date. He has also developed
a knack of combining unusual musical ingredients like field recordings, obscure movie samples, synth
glitches and pieces, with a guitarist and a vocalist, like on ‘Don’t worry I got you’ featuring Cito, to
produce songs that are much more accessible than before, but doesn’t lose the pioneering spirit
of his earlier works. This is not to say that he has abandoned his experimental, hard edged side
altogether, like the earthshaking banger of a track, ‘Heavy beats forever’ proves. The real triumph
of the album however lies in how effortlessly the entire work flows through different musical
landscapes. Although Somerfaan shows off his instinctive understanding of many different styles,
from the beautiful, melancholic instrumental, ‘I saw the whole thing happening’, to the hard electro
rock hip hop of ‘Eindelose somer’, it is one of those rare albums where the urge to hit the skip
button, never crosses one’s mind.
