One of South Africa’s leading Afrikaans hip hop & rap projects, Kallitz, was conceptualized in 1998 by producer and record label owner Dokte, and signed to Mothermix Records in 2004.
Between 2004 and 2006, Dokte has executive produced and released two albums by Kallitz, as well as produce music for various other projects and artists, including music for Kallitz and his own projects.
The Kallitz debut album ‘Die Ding Ruk Mal’ (2004) was voted ‘Album of the Month’ by FHM, ‘Album of the Week’ by CD Wherehouse and ‘Album of the Moment’ by www.africasgateway.com. It reached No 1 on the SA Rock Digest Album Charts and won ‘Best Hip Hop Album’ at the 2005 SABC 2 GMT Music Awards.
The second album, ‘Dukgesuip’ (2006), produced three No 1 Hits with ‘Wat Gaan Ons Maak’ featuring Steve Hofmeyr, the Cape Town anthem ‘Kaapse Paatie’ and ‘Suikerbossie’, a hip hop version of the Afrikaans classic; as well as the street classic title track ‘Dukgesuip’.
The song “Kallitz Innie Plek” was also featured in the movie Footskating as well as on the official movie soundtrack album released by EMI Music South Africa.
In August 2008 he was featured in season one of the SAFTA Award winning SABC2 reality tv show 'Jam Sandwich' where he spent 5 days filming and collaborating with Afrikaans rock artist Karen Zoid on a new track called “Good Times” on what was undoubtedly a highlight of the TV series.
On 30 September 2008 he released his 11-track EP album ‘Maak Mekaa Sterk’ as a freely downloadable album for a limited period.
After parting ways with his business partner at Mothermix Records, Dokte registered his own company called BLM Music with which to continue to realise his music ambitions.
In mid 2010 he collaborated with DJ Azuhl of Brasse Vannie Kaap on a 16-track mixtape project called “Die Spreekkaame Miekstyp”, which he also made available free to the public.
Dokte has spent the last year and a bit crafting his debut solo LP, entitled 'Die Afspraak', and it is now ready to be released in the first half of 2011. The album is entirely written, recorded, arranged, produced and mixed by Dokte, and looks to consist of between 16-18 full tracks. The first single ‘Weekend Special’ has been released as an exclusive on dokte.com in the first week of November 2010.
Dokte was invited to perform at the HipHopKop launch event in Oudtshoorn on 20 November 2010 and is an initiative to promote Afrikaans Hip Hop as a competition at at least three Afrikaans Music Festivals. He was then selected along with Ready D and Jack Parow as one of the three judges for the first round of the HipHopKop which took place at the Artscape Theatre in Cape Town on 18 January 2011.
