“Ek het dit nog net twee keer gehoor, en ek voel dit groei op my………….” are Francois Van Coke's opening lyrics on the Van Coke Kartel debut album.
Van Coke Kartel is dark rock at its loudest.
This new three-piece Afrikaans rock outfit progresses from the music that has made Fokofpolisiekar the most popular and successful Afrikaans Rock band up to date. Francois van Coke (vocalist) and Wynand Myburgh (bassist) from Fokofpolisiekar have joined forces with session drummer Justin Kruger to form Van Coke Kartel.
Van Coke and Myburgh grew up in Bellville and have known each other from a very young age. Their mutual passion for music led them to become the best of friends. Over the years they have been involved in various music projects and bands together, of which Fokofpolisiekar is the most well known.
In 2007 Fokofpolisiekar decided to take a deserved break. This break period gave Van Coke and Myburgh the opportunity to express their mutual musical interests and the two started writing songs together for the first time in years. With Van Coke on guitar and Myburgh on bass the two created rock songs that told the stories of their lives and their experiences over the past year. Stories of endless parties, binge drinking, fights, the connection they have with close friends and living in Cape Town.
Justin Kruger is no newcomer to the family. He stood in for Jaco ‘Snakehead’ Venter (Fokofpolisiekar drummer) after an accident in 2006 in which Jaco broke his arm. Justin also recorded with Fokofpolisiekar on the first ‘Swanesang’ session in March 2006.
Fokofpolisiekar band member Hunter Kennedy (guitarist) and Taxi Violence singer George Van Der Spuy joined Van Coke Kartel in the studio with the aim to add more of a collective feel to the album. Hunter co-wrote and recorded guitar and vocals on the track Buitenkant II and George sang on September Fools. Theo Crous also contributed with additional guitars and backing vocals.
Van Coke Kartel – Van Coke Kartel was produced by Theo Crous (Springbok Nude Girls and K.O.B.U.S) The album was recorded at Bellville Studios.
