BIOGRAPHY
A band born of melody, song writing,
maturity and focus. HEROES WEAR RED presents itself to the world
with pride, pedigree and passion.
HEROES,
founded by bass player Gavin Wienand
and vocalist Timothy Kroon,
prove to be a formidable song writing team, rounded off by drummer
Patrick Smith and guitarist Tumi Mothei.
The use of programming, combined with the energy of a rock band that
delivers strong pop songs is a formula which proves to be fresh and
widely appealing.
2008 saw the independent release of
the band’s debut album, “SURVIVING SEPTEMBER”. The limited
release to retail stepped up a gear in 2009 when HEROES joined
forces with MUSKETEER RECORDS
to further improve on the success of this already critically acclaimed
album. Co- produced and mixed, with additional programming by American
producer Rae Di Leo, known for his work on Filter, Veruca Salt
and Henry Rollins, to name a few, brought an international flair to
the album.
Spawning two national number 1 hits, “Beautiful Way” and “Am I”,
Heroes spent 2010 on the road winning over fans across the country,
with their stage energy and undeniable flair they know how to draw in
an audience.
2010 has further brought Heroes to
the eyes and ears of the public by placing in the top 10 of over 190
entries in the MK MVP competition.
Produced by Mannequin Pictures
and directed by Matthew Jankes, this is a video production of epic proportions.
This opportunity comes at a time when
Heroes are about to release the single for the video “Bring
Me Love”. Taking a new approach
to releasing material, the band is embarking on a series of digital
only “single” releases, which will culminate in a hard copy release
to retail in the last quarter of 2011.
A history
The band’s founding members comprise some of South Africa's most talented
musicians - had their genesis been in the USA or Europe, they would
probably have enjoyed superlatives such as 'Super Group' in their description.
Founding drummer Garth McLeod is arguably one of the country’s best.
In addition to being a member of award winning SA trip-rock legends
Sugardrive, Garth has leant his considerable drumming skills to several
other noteworthy SA bands over the years and has played a role in shaping
the works of bands like Martin Rocka & The Sick Shop, Watershed
and Scarlet Box. Garth in late 2008 reluctantly parted company with
the band and handpicked his replacement in the form of Patrick Smith,
who has proved himself to be most worthy of Garths praise.
Frontman vocalist Tim Kroon, has made significant inroads into the industry
with numerous regional music competition titles under his belt, the
most significant of these being awarded the Steven Tyler Scholarship
from Berklee College of Music (Boston, MA, USA) in 2005.
Gavin Wienand - bassist and founder of Bloodmoney, is also a decade
long member of the aforementioned Sugardrive. The Bloodmoney project
was more than two years in conception for Gavin, stemming from an initial
desire to further his writing and production skills outside the Sugardrive
dynamic.
In 2009 Guitarist Tumi Mothei joined
the band making Heroes a settled four piece. Tumi was handpicked by
the band after he competed in the “Do band up” competition where
bassist Gavin did a guest judging appearance.
As Bloodmoney, the band completed a countrywide summer tour (The Go
Summer Tour powered by Xbox 360) in December 2006 alongside the bands
Driverlane and Prime Circle. In 2007 they completed their second nation-wide
tour (The Powerzone Road show) and were also selected to perform at
Door stock and the Oppikoppi Easter Festivals.
In 2008, the band proudly released their debut album called ‘Surviving
September’ under the new name Heroes Wear Red, produced by American
producer Rae Di Leo (Filter, Billy Idol, Veruca Salt, Henry Rollins).
