“In my 23 years of music writing, I have never encountered anything like Die Antwoord.”
Theunis Engelbrecht – Die Burger
A group of self-proclaimed "zef" South Africans who rap in English and Afrikaans over rave-style beats? Turns out, that’s just what hip-hop needed.
Jody Rosen, Rolling Stone Magazine
“They disturb, they entertain, they break down stereotypes, they’re sexy…”
YOU Magazine
Since Die Antwoord shot to international fame in March this year, the global zef rap rave music phenomenon has captured the imagination of millions, with no end in sight. Some achievements include accumulating nearly 8 million youtube hits for their “Enter The Ninja” music video to date, breaking into the UK Top 40 chart in September and having played over 80 gigs internationally since July this year.
$0$ is a very personal album, my blaar. It’s about people stuck in a bad situation, people with no hope and no idea how to get themselves out of there…” – Ninja
Die Antwoord, comprising of Ninja, Yo-landi Vi$$er and DJ Hi-Tek, have now released their debut album, $0$. The album is released in South Africa through Rhythm Records and internationally through Interscope Records, which is also home to Lady Gaga, Black Eyed Peas, Eminem, Dr. Dre and 50 Cent.
$0$ – the South African edition, which contains 6 more tracks than the international release, including a number of vocal skits, is a darkly-complex album which fearlessly explores aspects of the human psyche, relationships and comments on the fractured nature of South African culture and identity while turning long-accepted stereotypes upside down with every thumping track.
Delivered in Die Antwoord’s inimitable, take-it-or-leave-it, in-your-face style, cloaked in irresistible beats and deliciously-dirty choruses that sticks in one’s head, it is plain to see why Die Antwoord is fast becoming SA’s most talked about musical export.
"In the way of only a handful of artists in history, Ninja and Yo-landi have created a new world; one that hurdles over existing boundaries with the same full-tilt energy that marks every single live performance."
Diane Coetzer, Sunday Times
