DAN SHOUT : GREETINGS & SALUTATIONS
Agro-Jazz
- “TEA WITH ALVIN” is
an “Agro Jazz” Fusion tune about post-jam session drinks with a
legend of South African Jazz, guitarist Alvin Dyers. Being a Metal and
Jazz fan, Shout fuses two of his favourite styles to aurally demonstrate
how dangerous it can be for one to consume anything that comes in a
teapot when hanging with Alvin and his crew! The track features Shout
on alto, tenor and baritone saxes, guitar maestro, Gorm Helfjord, Shane
Cooper on electric bass and Mike Horne on drum kit.
- “MUSIC GAZEBO” is an
amazing composition by Sakhile Moleshe about a man who has a heart attack
on his way to a concert in a gazebo. The song depicts the time between
life and death, where his ancestors are pulling the man’s soul to
the grave, yet his body still wants to drink wine and enjoy the concert.
The song is a fantastic medium with which to explore the crazy and more
avant-garde sides of one’s instruments and imagination and features
the remarkably creative vocal techniques of Moleshe. Shout also imported
Czech radio symphony’s percussionist, Justin Ventzke, to feature on
Jazz triangle on this recording date.
- “ANT IN AFRICA” is a
tune written in tribute to Antonio Carlos Jobim. Shout brings the continents
of Africa and South America a litte closer by fusing “Jobim-esque”
harmonies and chord movements with African sounds and rhythms, such
as the 12/8 groove which gives the track an Afro-Jazz lilt. Cape Town
drumming legend, Kesivan Naidoo, percussionist, Ronan Skillen and double
bassist Shane Cooper all from the Cape Town band, “BABU” feature
in this number.
- “DANNY DOPAMINE” is
a straight-ahead Jazz tune about Shout’s alter ego. Dopamine is the
chemical in the brain which makes one happy and have fun which is exactly
what this track is meant to do for both performer and listener. The
track also has an aggressive rock edge to it, drawing on the Shout’s
passion for Rock and Metal. He also composed this track as a medium
to feature the outrageous drumming of Kesivan Naido and fusion sounds
of Gorm Heljord on guitar.
- “BIG B” is soothing
ballad drawing on Shout’s years as a Classical musician. The track
features a fantastic cellist in Ariella Caira (Sterling EQ) and crescendos
from an introduction of Indian Singing Bowl to a climax before fading
right back into a peaceful emptiness.
- “FEAR OF LOVE” is the
second composition on the album by vocalist, Sakhile Moleshe. The track
features the tight Funk/Hip Hop/House rhythm section playing of Gorm
Heljord (guitar), Shaun Johannes (electric bass) and Mike Horne (drums)
and the soulful vocals of Moleshe.
- Shout tips is hat to his
biggest South African saxophone influence, Mr. Winston Mankunku with
“ETOSHA” about one of Shout’s favourite places, Etosha National
Park in Namibia. Shout is joined by long-time school and varsity friend
and well-known South African trumpeter, Lee Thomson, on flugelhorn.
The subtle percussion on this track by Ronan Skillen is the “cherry
on the cake” as this track lulls one into a sense of relaxation, as
if you were chilling next to a watering hole in the Namib Desert.
- “OFF THE CHRISTMAS CARD
LIST” demonstrates Shout’s sense of humour drawing from influences
such as his Father’s Namibian rock band, Bedrock, and Aussie Comedian,
Kevin Bloody Wilson. This 12- Bar Blues number pokes fun at guys who
are real men’s men until they get a new girlfriend and suddenly vanish
off the scene amidst a flurry of excuses for not being able to hang
out anymore! Highlights of the tune are the use of Capetonian, Southern
Suburbs slang and West Coast accents in both the lyrics and the telephone
conversation as well as really rocking tenor sax and guitar solo’s.
