The strong imagery in Breyten Breytenbach’s work has served as inspiration to musicians for years. After the successes of the albums “Om te Breyten” (SAMA Award – Best Afrikaans Compilation), “Mondmusiek” (Best Esoteric CD in Afrikaans) and “Lady One”, Rhythm Records is now releasing “Beste Breyten”.
While compiling Beste Breyten, the aim was to produce an accessible album which, through flowing rhythms and melodies, would introduce listeners to Breyten’s unorthodox and revolutionary usage of the Afrikaans language.
Apart from the five new tracks produced for “Beste Breyten”, the album also contains some of the most melodic tracks from Mondmusiek and Om te Breyten. The album tears open with the pulsating, energetic Ek Wag In My Hart (sang by aKing’s Laudo Liebenberg), from where it gently drifts to calmer waters, and before long listeners are transported by the mantric metrum of Breyten’s word canvasses.
This is a CD which, with the initial listen, is best played through. There is a tangible development in the continuity and synergy of the album as several themes are explored. These include personal yearning, man’s relation to the universe, love and mortality as well as spiritual awareness.
With collaborators like Laudo Liebenberg, Johannes Kerkorrel, Lize Beekman, Anton Goosen, Sarah Theron, Piet Botha, Jean Marais, Paul Riekert and Laurinda Hofmeyr, Breyten’s word art on Beste Breyten is presented through a variety of musical arrangements and rhythms, with a highly-accessible, listenable album as a result.
