It's Complicated (The Facebook Song) byDeep Fried Man
Deep Fried Man’s music is uniquely South African, completely original and frequently hilarious. His sound is an eclectic mix of folk, rock, hip-hop and blues, but it is his crazy lyrics which set him apart from all the other singer-songwriters. He has gained a cult following in the last few years for the energy and humour of his live shows and for his debut album Deep Fried Man is Not Amused, a deeply personal set of songs focusing on his serious side. Following the release of the album he has decided to concentrate exclusively on comedy material, and ‘It’s Complicated’ is just one of his new tracks that have been drawing comparisons with other comedy-musicians such as ‘Weird Al’ Jankovic and Flight of the Conchords. Recent appearances on SABC3 comedy show Last Say on Sunday, on FHM’s website, in SL Magazine, Design Indaba and in the Channel24.com download charts prove that Deep Fried Man is tired of being alternative and ready for mainstream success…
Thanks to the genius of producer Andre Remesses Scheepers (Tasha Baxter, Tamara Dey), ‘It’s Complicated’ has come a long way from its humble beginnings as a minor internet sensation (you can find the video on YouTube), and has been transformed into a polished pop gem ready for the airwaves. Andre heard the track at a gig where Deep Fried Man supported upcoming pop sensation Auriol Hayes and declared it a hit. And after his magical touch it most certainly is that.
Like most of Deep Fried Man’s music, ‘It’s Complicated’ reflects a quirky sense of humour and a wicked talent for satire. The song tells the story of the singer’s tragic online attempts to convince vixen Mooi Meisie, who has ‘the most beautiful profile pic ever’, that they are ‘meant to be together’ even though they ‘have no friends in common’. The result is a stirring ballad of unrequited Facebook love that, while resulting in tragedy for Deep Fried Man, will provide pure comedy for all listeners except the three people in Putsonderwater who have never heard of Facebook.
