Everything You’ve Always Wanted To Know About Deep Fried Man is Not Amused (and possibly a whole lot more).
The initial guitar and vocal tracks for this album were recorded by Arlyn Culwick at HFLr studios in Parkhurst, Johannesburg in April 2009. The rest of the album was made at ZSkilz’ home studio. It was made using Renoise. It’s a modern update of an old school form of music making software called a tracker. Only real geeks like ZSkilz know how to use one.
Many of the album’s beats were made by us wondering around ZSkilz flat hitting all kinds of found objects and sampling the results (no really). So though you may not be able to hear it, there are tons of pots and pans and baking trays in the mix, everything including the kitchen sink. We also sampled me trying to beat box. The rest of the beats were made with an 808 drum machine emulator. Then ZSkilz added lots of minimal digital synth sounds.
The following things have made this album possible:
The production skills of ZSkilz, aka my friend Jaco
The unlimited use of said producer’s lounge (Jaco recently graduated from bedroom producer to lounge producer)
Countless cups of tea made by Jaco’s girlfriend Jana, as well other refreshments (herbal and otherwise).
5 years of life
4 failed relationships
Road rage, apathy, existential angst, beauty, love, hate, loneliness, heartbreak and fear of failure.
Arlyn’s studio and advice.
Sauly’s basslines and friendship.
Kidu’s doodles, even though I didn't end up using them for the cover.
Jaco’s endless patience.
Jana’s endless patience.
My incredible family, who love me no matter what.
There is a lot of me in this album. Some might say too much.
It’s not a very happy album, but it is a very honest one. Its lyrics say many of the things I am too scared to say to people in real life. Thank you for hearing it.
Peace
Deep Fried Man
