Rokkeloos, an all-female rock band from Pretoria, South Africa, is a fresh breath in the staid South African rock scene. Led by the enigmatic Prinses Petro, they'd established themselves as one of the most entertaining and explosive live rock acts in SA, seen at all the right venues and festivals.
'Nooiensvaart' translates as 'maiden voyage', as this is the band's debut release. The album shows an understanding of their medium that belies their tender age. There are equal doses of angst and beauty. Different moods and genres of music are combined effortlessly; they have the ability to mix hard, guitar-heavy thunder with intelligent lyrics and wicked humour. As a result, many mother grundies classify their music as 'unsafe', which is not far off the mark. This is not an easy listening album.
In true independent fashion, they got Battery9 kingpin Paul Riekert to produce the album.
