Checked Zebra began in 2004 when Rob, Luke and Dayne, decided to start making their own music after jamming together for a year. They became really passionate about achieving the difficult goal of creating fresh original music of an international standard which was fun and vibey as well as being proudly South African.
For a year, the trio practised regularly at Lukes house, and although their music was definitely improving another element to the band was needed: a brass section. After many attempts of their friends to try and fill this void, attempts which are much appreciated by the band, they eventually found and hung on to their now permanent brass section, Thor Rixon (trumpet) and Joseph mac Millan, otherwise known as Mackie(trombone).
Over the last 6 months of practising once a week on a Saturday afternoon in a relaxed, but professional enviroment, and a few shows with bands such as Captain Stu and the Llamas, The Allstar Funk Four, Cheech, The Rudimentals, 7th Son and Veeva Feeva their music has been taken to the next level, and they feel their dream is becoming more and more of a reality. They are constantly finding new inspirations and forming new ideas to further the growth of their music, which is very exciting for the band and keeps them all motivated.
The band members are all good friends and have shared many laughs and good times with one another. This plays a huge role in how well they work together and the product of their friendship reflects through their performances as well as their music. [December 2008]
