Jan Hoogendyk’s passion for music was already evident in his childhood when he listened to his mother’s cassettes on his walkman until the batteries gave up the ghost. In his school years he played in several bands and on completion of school went to Europe and played his guitar on the street corners of London & Scotland for 2 years.
On returning to South Africa, Jan decided to study contemporary music at Allenby Campus in Johannesburg where he focused on piano, guitar, singing & songwriting. During this time Jan was appointed as the worship leader & music director of AGS Randburg Gemeente (now Mosaiek). Under the guidance of Johan Heystek, Jan was responsible for the church’s evening services for the next 6 years. It was during this time that Jan gave rise to his alter ego – Mono. Mono released 3 albums in within a 5 year period, working with Gallo Record Company amongst others, & enjoyed success within the English market.
In 2007 Jan moved to George in the Western Cape & made it his new home. He currently serves as the worship leader at the Eden Congregation, which is pastored by Koos van der Merwe of “Prophet “ fame. Encouragement from friends & mentors led Jan to try his hand at writing Afrikaans songs. And so “Diep Riviere” came to be.
With his new surroundings serving as inspiration Jan tackled this challenge head on. Together with Broken Records, the 10 best songs were selected for this album. This album is more than just another step in his musical career; it’s the beginning of a new journey for Jan. The title track is already included in the worship of the Eden Congregation & every song on the album is a specific & meaningful expression of this exciting chapter in Jan’s life.
