U R Fantastic by Ian von Memerty

When Port Elizabeth-based TV Host (Strictly Come Dancing), reality TV series judge (SA’s GOT TALENT) and multi-award winning performer and theatrical creator, Ian von Memerty embarks on a new project, he does it big.

Von Memerty’s first commercial CD is just that – BIG! It includes “24 of the hottest musicians, and 18 of the grooviest original songs in one world class package.” The majority of the band members were sourced from the Eastern Cape’s pool of talented artists. According to von Memerty, “Our soloists can hold their own against any musician in the country!”

Entitled “You Are Fantastic” after his TV catch-phrase, von Memerty’s album will be available in stores from March 01. “It will also be available for download for all my tech-savvy fans.”

The first song from the album is due to be released to stations across the country on 15 February – the day after Valentine’s day. “This is one special song,” says von Memerty. “It is the perfect Valentines antidote entitled ‘Out of my Life’.”

The rest of the album includes a wide range of songs which showcase von Memerty’s versatile vocals from swing, to funky put downs, bopping through pop and soaring through ballads, the songs explore the full range of emotion from the sassy to the sentimental.

According to von Memerty, he never thought of releasing a solo album until he met Debbie Everard – the musical director on the CD. “I have sung about a 1000 songs over the last 25 years, and have written over a 100 songs for other projects and different people, but I have never thought of going the singer/songwriter route.”

However, after observing Everard’s work on a project last year, von Memerty felt the creative juices flowing and decided to embark on this ambitious project.

“When I approached her about doing an original CD – featuring brass in every possible format – she looked very serious, took a deep breath and said ‘let’s try it’! During the planning stages, sleep was a luxury because my brain would not shut up, and original, fascinating ideas kept jumping out at me in bizarre places. Music like nothing I have ever written before – with a wide stylistic range but all the songs needed brass or wind instruments to truly come to life. Debbie’s orchestrations are the funkiest, ‘funnest’ most fantastic work I could have hoped for! Poppy but integrous, grooving but layered, appealing and yet still honed – they are like riding the biggest and lowest Harley, or kite surfing, (I think)! They are addictive to sing to! From a swinging Big Band with Port Elizabeth’s Shawn Lyon tootin’ a horn so hot that you want to dress up and dance; to the most awesome ‘flugel like’ trombone solos by talented local youngster, Kyle du Preez that you make you want to sit down and cry – the full range of the section is explored and exploited.”

The diversity of the talent involved in the album is dazzling. From the veteran skills of Ali Heyns the engineer and recording producer (this album was his 600th CD), Rob Watson, the undisputed ‘King of Drummers’ in South Africa, and Roelof Colyn, the ‘savant’ of the piano, down to Port Elizabeth-based 15 yr old Zintle Thomas, playing a mean bass trombone, and 18 year old Ondela Simakuhle with very sexy sax riffs.

“Every gender, age, and race came together sharing one common gift – superb musicianship. One of the things that attracted me most to using Eastern Cape musicians is the unique sound of the brass section that we put together. Also, our bass player, Andrew Warneke, is as good, if not better than any I have worked with in the last 30 years!”

According to Ian, the album is “a complete package, the CD contains lyrics to make you smile, music to make you want to sing – give it a listen and at the end, you will feel FANTASTIC!”

My Jazz In House by Keith Ramaila

Keith was born in Ga-Sekororo (named after the king Sekororo Mahlo) in a village called Lorain, did his primary and high school in the same village.

I started by learning how to play a piano early at the age of 14.My first instrument I played was an accordion which I found in my father’s wardrobe and got fascinated by the instrument because it looked more like a piano to me.

I started learning how to play a piano early at the age of 14, by visiting my next door church of Nazareth Revival where I got a chance of learning how to play the piano.

I later moved to a township called Namakgale (Phalaborwa) in 1997 after I passed my matric and joined a band called NVGs which also played much bigger role in grooming me on how to play in a group. We toured Limpopo with the band and that’s where I learned my stage performances experience.

I later formed a jazz group which had opportunities of playing in the Greater Phalaborwa Jazz Club which was regarded as the big Jazz club in our area.

In the year 2000 I moved to Gauteng Johannesburg looking for greener pastures, where I ended up going to college at Boston to study IT (web design) as things in music could not work.

While at college I did my live performances sessions in Newtown Joburg mostly in a Jazz restaurant called Shivava where they had Thursday sessions for up and coming artists. I also had few opportunities to play in Melrose arch Sandton in a restaurant called Moyos.

In 2007 I got a recording deal with cooler records under Sheer Publishing for my first album titled ‘’MAMA’’, which was a mixture of African jazz and traditional Sepedi music.

I recorded my second album titled ‘’you are not alone” which I released independently in 2010 as I departed with my company cooler records.

I wrote a 2010 song for soccer world which was more about the province of Gauteng as a welcome song for our tourists, which was run by Music on Line Industry (MIO).

I opened my own company in 2012 called Triple K Music Production where I recorded my third album titled: My Jazz in House and did my own video of the album. I decided to call the album Jazz in House because I have been doing Jazz music all the time so when I took a decision to do a bit of a dance music I thought it would be right to mix world dance music with jazz so the sound could be different.
